![]() Some of the accents are a wee bit generic but nothing that jars you out of the story and she is always consistent with characters voices.įamily, slavery, magic, rebellion, separation. What can I say? I'm a greedy reader and terrible at waiting. Or rather this kind of trilogy is fine if you discover them after they've all been written and can binge on the whole lot. ![]() I like books with an overarching story but with a satisfying conclusion at the end of of each book. One star off for being a trilogy so no resolution at the end. ![]() I will definitely be getting the rest when they appear. Much as I love London, it makes a change to have a northern industrial setting for parts of the story. So, if you like alternative England with magic then I recommend this book. There's a bit at the very end which I wasn't expecting and which made me happy and expectant. Vic James is good at showing not telling and all the exposition comes naturally from the characters. ![]() The characters are well-formed with believable (if currently obscure in some cases) motivation, and I'm looking forward to finding out what they do next. What if those with power had absolute power and knew they could get away with anything? I totally believe that they would. ![]() The magic of the Equals is well thought out and interesting. You've read the synopsis so don't need me for that. ![]()

In a letter from 1946, Orwell wrote, "I dare say it's unfair in some ways and inaccurate in some details, but much of it is simply reporting what I have seen". Nonetheless, Orwell's harsh portrayal of colonial society was felt by "some old Burma hands" to have "rather let the side down". ![]() A British edition, with altered names, appeared a year later. īurmese Days was first published "further afield," in the United States, because of concerns that it might be potentially libelous that the real provincial town of Katha had been described too realistically and that some of its fictional characters were based too closely on identifiable people. Set in British Burma during the waning days of empire, when Burma was ruled from Delhi as part of British India, the novel serves as "a portrait of the dark side of the British Raj." At the centre of the novel is John Flory, "the lone and lacking individual trapped within a bigger system that is undermining the better side of human nature." The novel describes "both indigenous corruption and imperial bigotry" in a society where, "after all, natives were natives-interesting, no doubt, but finally.an inferior people". Burmese Days is the first novel by English writer George Orwell, published in 1934. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() John Marsden has never been an author who speaks down to his readers and he's never been one to treat his female characters like stereotypes, so it is unsurprising that this book has such an enormous impact. Meanwhile, Mandy, whom Tracey comes to rely on heavily (often referring to her as Manna, which is interesting given the biblical connotations of Manna,) has terrible family problems of her own, mostly to do with her violent and gun obsessed brother, Steve. Cleverly, Marsden does not reveal the specifics of Tracey's crime, leaving readers to put the pieces together and to guess what actually happened. Eventually, it is revealed that Tracey is in the a maximum security area of juvenile detention centre and that she will be behind bars for a very long time. The pair start corresponding, but soon it becomes obvious that Tracey is not being entirely truthful about her idyllic life. Set in an unnamed part of Australia back in the days before email, it opens with fifteen year old Mandy answering an ad that she saw in a magazine from Tracey, asking for a pen pal. Twenty-five years after Letters From the Inside was first published this YA novel still makes a huge impact with its haunting cliffhanger ending. ![]() ![]() But the key to writing this book, I discovered, was to control the scale and not to let things fall apart too quickly. Since the 1917 Revolution the polemic between rationalists and irrationalists has become directly relevant to the way life is lived in the Soviet Union, and a knowledge of the irrationalist point of view is essential for an understanding of much of Soviet literature and of the foundations of Soviet dissidence. The idea of man as an essentially irrational being has preoccupied some of the most influential of Russian thinkers, including the three important Soviet writers considered by Dr Edwards in this book.
